First Minister Announces Minimum Pricing on Alcohol Bill in Wales
During an update on the Welsh Government legislative programme today, First Minister Carwyn Jones released a statement outlining his government’s legislative priorities for the year including plans to mandate minimum pricing on the supply of alcohol in Wales.
It is hoped that by increasing the price of alcohol through a minimum pricing tariff, people will be discouraged from drinking alcohol excessively, particularly those considered hazardous drinkers.
“Evidence shows a direct link between drinking harmful levels and the availability of cheap alcohol. The Public Health (Minimum Price for Alcohol) Bill will propose a formula for calculating the minimum price for alcohol, based on its strength and volume, and enable local authorities to enforce the powers and bring prosecutions” (Welsh Government).
68% of all respondents who participated in the draft bill consultation in 2015/16 welcomed the new legislation.
