Citalopram: Suspected Drug Interaction with Cocaine
Drug safety issues alert to raise awareness of drug interaction between Citalopram and Cocaine.
Following a recent Coroner’s report looking into the inquest of a man who died of a subarachnoid hemorrhage, healthcare practitioners are being urged to be mindful of illicit drug use when making an informed assessment as to whether or not to prescribe the medication.
The case was brought to the UK Commission on Human Medicine’s Pharmacovigilance Expert Advisory Group and found a plausible link between cocaine and Citalopram (anti-depressant medication); in addition to other causal effects such as hypertension and an increased risk of bleeding.
